Costume Change...

Ever have one of those projects where you know your workmanship is pretty okay...
but it's so blah you are horribly disappointed?
Ever have that sinking feeling?
Yes, yes... it's lovely yarn and WHY it isn't quite making the cut?
Why are the people (My Boyo and Pixie) in your life telling you over and over, it would look better in the green?
Do you find yourself wheedling for a ride to the LYS to exchange it for the pattern specific yarn at 10% off?

Well, this is exactly what happened to me this lovely holiday weekend.

While Ernesto was sweeping my little corner of the coast with swaths of rain...
I sat on the couch looking forlornly at this...
DSCN0735.JPG
Yeah, it looks pretty (unremarkable).
Too much like a cabled sweatshirt, I kept telling myself.
Yeah, but it's Rowan All Seasons Cotton...

sigh.

Ernesto passed...and the sun came out and so did my wallet.
I went to Cloverhill
Where they had Tahki Donegal Tweed for 10% off.
(I saved $7 dollars, people!)

I was weak...I gave in to the Green.

Satisfaction is...covered in tweedy little flecks of blue and orange.

I was also able to partake of a little knit and nosh on Monday at the Borders in Columbia...
Met some lovely new knitters and made controversial statements ;)

Before this... I met up with Lauren for a little dinner and shopping.
DSCN0740.JPG
We both surprised each other with a skein of Euroflax Linen for those hand towels in MasonDixon.
It was really funny because neither of us knew the other had picked up a skein for the other.
I think we'd both been saying how we really wanted some...
and in life's little coincidences...we got some!

I also picked up a new notions tote-thingy -
Partly because mine was slowly shredding itself to death and leaving bits all over my bag,
and partly because I'm a sucker for notions and their respective tote-thingyies.

Doo-Dads...one of the best things about knitting is all the Doo-Dads you can collect.

I've been knitting and listening to this...
DSCN0742.JPG
I highly recommend this book.
Bill Bryson is irreverent, insightful and dryly hilarious.
All the things I admire.

I've also discovered yet another something in the world I must avoid...
because I love it so and I could eat my weight in it in about 45 seconds...
Pocky.

All in all, not a bad way to spend a holiday...

Hope your basements stayed dry and you enjoyed your holiday weekend!

P.S.
I did make a mistake - arrgh...I ripped back and now have perfect symmetry...
Thank you!

Glad to hear from you, busy gal!

First of all, I didn't think there was really anything wrong with the gray... although when I saw the green (& it's tweedy goodness) I agreed with you. It needs the spunk of those little flecks to really make it POP!

I'm happy to see you survived Earnesto AND got some new goodies this weekend. We didn't do much of anything either.

Love you!

I think you made the right move in getting the tweed yarn. It made the project go from unremarkable to va va voom!
That's so funny that you and L got each other the same yarn. Great minds think alike, methinks. I saw some gorgeous handdyed linen at All About Yarn, it would make gorgeous towels or curtains.

Mmmm, pocky...

I love strawberry Pocky. I love the green. Today we have more rain. Where did the sun go?

Posted by: Vickie at September 5, 2006 01:02 PM

I was skeptical at first, but after seeing the cardi in person, I have to agree: tweed is the way to go! and that green is awesome. LOVE it.

That was too funny about the whole Euroflax thing. When are we making our towels? :)

No kidding - I *LOVE* Bill Bryson. I have read several of his books and really loved them all. My favorite was probably "In a Sunburned Country" about Australian travels. Check it out!

Great fun last night! :)

Must agree. What a difference! From Blah to BAM!! Plus, it's green and tweedy.
Enough said.

Must also agree about the collecting of Doo-Dads. I'm a sucker for them. Love the tote. :D

You made the absolute correct decision - you were right, the cotton looks "blah". But the tweed is "oh la la"!!

Posted by: Claudia at September 5, 2006 02:43 PM

I hate to say it, and probably you have noticed it already, but... are you sure, that the green cables are correct? I'm refering to the second from the right.
looking forward to see the finished project

first off the grey sweater looks great and then I saw the green. VA VA VOOM! It really does make the pattern pop! Fantastic choice and exactly the colour I would pick up :)

Posted by: Kelly at September 5, 2006 03:36 PM

I love Bill Bryson! I just finished "A Short History of Nearly Everything", which I really enjoyed.

I'm glad the green tweed is working out better for you--it looks great!

Had fun at Borders last night :)

Posted by: Jen at September 5, 2006 03:47 PM

I think you made the right choice. The green one looks really so much better! the Rowan ASC looks good, too. But the yarn really makes it on the second one. It's so pretty with the colored flecks!

I love Bill Bryson! have you read (or heard) A short history of nearly everything? It's great!

I'm with you, the green tweed looks amazing!! But, I also have to note that your second row of cables from the right does have an oops in it ... it's a super easy fix, though!! If you haven't fixed a cable before, read through http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/archives/2006/06/20/all_is_not_lost.html ... her tutorial has saved my arse in the past! Sorry to be the bad person who mentions the twisted cable ... I only mention it because I would want to know if it were mine ... if you don't care, please, please, PLEASE completely ignore me and my comment. I'm not meaning to be judgmental at all. Honest.

Damn! I was totally going to use grey for that cardi! now I want flecks of goodness...yours looks awesome! I can't wait to see it done.

Hey Heather,

Great to meet you last night. I missed the controversial statements--next time, I'll have to sit at your end of the table! ;-)

I agree with the others about Bill Bryson. He's one of the few authors who can actually make me laugh out loud, and he and I have the same opinions on so many things. If he were younger (and a little more attractive, and not married, and lived in this country) I'd have to marry him!

Lisa

P.S. ITA about the green. Much better.

Posted by: Lisa at September 5, 2006 07:54 PM

I love the green. Good choice!

Posted by: Chrissy at September 5, 2006 08:52 PM

I like the green better, too, but what is this reference to Boyo? Is there a new man in your life?

Posted by: Susan at September 5, 2006 09:08 PM

omg I LOVE the green! It looks so rustic and gorgeous and just perfect for fall! It will look smashing on you.

You're about the fourth blogger in the last week to rave about pocky -- where do you find such a thing? (Have you ever tried Ritter Sport Butter Biscuits? Sold at trader Joes. Am really sorry I tried them. Addictive.)

Posted by: Ann at September 5, 2006 10:09 PM

If a color just ain't calling to you, put the project to rest. And frankly, you made the right choice. The green is just FABULOUS, and much more "you", in my opinion. And those tweedy looks flecks are a bonus!

Posted by: Becky at September 6, 2006 02:24 AM

YOU are right, the green is better. It's gorgeous!

I. Love. Pocky. I just found a bunch when I was in NY and ate it all up!

Posted by: Jenny at September 6, 2006 03:36 AM

I LOVE that green Donegal Tweed! And that is too funny about the Euroflax. Great minds think alike!

Posted by: allison at September 6, 2006 09:44 AM

I adore Pocky sticks! Especially the crushed almond coated ones. Mmmm... I even named my first cat Pocky. =)

Posted by: Rossana at September 6, 2006 10:59 AM

Definately made the right choice with the green tweedy goodness. I absolutely love that color, and I feel the same way about my blue color that I chose after looking at all the other hoodies in progress too. Yours will be gorgeous in that color. I love the other pressies that you got too.

Posted by: Sue at September 6, 2006 07:04 PM

love the green....and ADORE pocky sticks!!

Posted by: may at September 7, 2006 02:45 PM

Ha! I didn't even notice the mistake! I'm such a bad knitter... or at least a very unobservant one!

Posted by: Erin at September 7, 2006 10:22 PM

The grey was nice, but I agree - I LOVE the tweedy green color! SO PRETTY!

Posted by: Esther at September 8, 2006 03:19 PM

Oh I'll have to try Bryson on tape.

Great great idea.

As for the green switch.....you are the boss of your knitting!

Posted by: kathy b at September 10, 2006 10:07 PM

Glad to hear all is well. I too would have opened my wallet for that gorgeous green goodness of tweed.

Posted by: Bonnie at September 11, 2006 09:45 PM

I can't believe I missed Knitnite when you were there. Hopefully I'll see you at the next one? Love the green Donegal Tweed. It's looking absolutely gorgeous.

Posted by: Erin at September 12, 2006 09:04 PM

Oooh! Love the green - good call. Hello little Pumpkin - what a cutie!!

Posted by: Vicki at September 13, 2006 02:19 PM

Hey girlie! Oh...I just love the new donegal tweed you got there! It does look fabulous in the cables. And you are bad influence...I had to go to Cloverhill and buy myself some. I too saved $7 : )

Posted by: Donna at September 13, 2006 04:37 PM

Love your blog--I live in Annapolis and have been meaning to get up to Cloverhill--is it great? Also love Bill Bryson--read his "In a Sunburned Country" while flying to Australia. He's a hoot--I agree. Just started blogging myself. Come visit.

Posted by: Kathleen at September 14, 2006 04:25 PM

There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with the grey, but DAMN! the green looks FAB! I LOVE!

Also, I know I've been a bit MIA, but did you get back together with the BOY? or is this a new boy? Or did you guys never actually break up and I just made that whole scenario up?

Posted by: Lara at September 18, 2006 12:36 PM

absolutely agree on green for this project like everybody else though i'm a grey loving person. But what will happen with the grey knitted piece...frog? it is also good enough to survive.
